The Power of Simplicity

By Jordan Rhys Hughes

Pioneer of modern architecture Le Corbusier famously said, “The home should be the treasure chest of living”. This approach expressed the notion that every living space must be an extension of an individual’s identity, personality and philosophy. Through his designs, Nico Sauzier strives to ensure that one’s living or working environment is an architectural reflection of who they are. But how is this done and how can it be done for an affordable price? It is in fact quite simple, by returning to the basics of design.

You may think this approach seems oversimplified; however this is not the case. It is about being simple in the shape, texture and volume of the space, so that you can add your own unique flavor. Transforming these elements can be done through something as simple as repainting a wall and restarting with a “blank canvas”. For example, the façade pictured above was originally mundane and boring, but it was converted into something personal and artistic by beginning with an all-white “blank canvas” and adding unique colors and features to make it stand out.

Irrespective of the changes you want to make, whether it is the façade or the interior architecture, it is far more cost-effective to return to a basic architectural design rather than employing an overly complex design.  Through the façade, whether it is created with stonework, plaster, wood siding or metal, you can turn simplicity into beauty. You can begin with a “blank canvas” and then add a pinstripe to the exterior or whatever you think will best capture the space you desire.

Likewise, with interior architecture, beginning with “blank canvas” gifts the space greater opportunity to be transformed to something special. Beginning with a fresh space gives you the freedom to experiment with multiple elements such as hanging up some unique art, adding wallpaper to a room or repainting with the color of your choice generate the mood and identity of the space. These essential basics are all simple and cost effective techniques that will give you the freedom to have a space designed that will inspire, excite and transform your reality.
